Abkhazia

Abkhazia is a territory located in the South Caucasus, along the eastern coast of the Black Sea. Internationally, it is widely recognized as part of Georgia, although it has declared independence and operates with its own de facto government. The region has a complex political status shaped by historical conflicts, particularly following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. A brief war between Georgian forces and Abkhaz separatists resulted in Abkhazia establishing separate administrative control, with limited international recognition from a small number of states.

Geographically, Abkhazia features a diverse landscape that includes Black Sea beaches, subtropical lowlands, and the mountainous terrain of the Greater Caucasus range. Its economy is relatively small and relies on tourism, agriculture, and financial support from external partners. The region’s cultural identity reflects a mix of Abkhaz traditions, Caucasian heritage, and Soviet-era influences. Due to its disputed status, Abkhazia remains an important and sensitive topic in regional geopolitics and international relations.
