Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two British Overseas Territories located on the island of Cyprus. Officially known as the Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs), they were retained by the United Kingdom in 1960 when Cyprus gained independence. These territories primarily serve as military bases and play a strategic role in British and NATO operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Unlike typical colonies, Akrotiri and Dhekelia are administered mainly for military purposes rather than civilian settlement or economic development.
Geographically, the areas are situated along the southern coast of Cyprus and include important facilities such as RAF Akrotiri. Although under British sovereignty, the territories are closely integrated with the surrounding Cypriot communities, and many Cypriots live and work within or near the base areas. The SBAs have their own legal and administrative framework but cooperate with the Republic of Cyprus on various civil matters. Due to their strategic location, Akrotiri and Dhekelia remain significant in regional security and international defense policy.
