Azerbaijan is a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia in the South Caucasus region. It borders Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. The capital city, Baku, lies on the western shore of the Caspian and is known for its modern skyline as well as its historic Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Azerbaijan’s landscape includes the Caucasus Mountains in the north, semi-desert areas in the center, and fertile lowlands near major rivers such as the Kura.
Historically influenced by Persian, Turkic, and Russian cultures, Azerbaijan became independent in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The country’s economy is strongly driven by oil and natural gas exports, which have significantly shaped its modern development. Azerbaijan also has a rich cultural heritage, including traditional music such as mugham and a strong literary tradition. Due to its energy resources and strategic location between Europe and Asia, Azerbaijan plays an important role in regional geopolitics and international energy markets.
